NOTES AND TIPS ON ULTIMOTION DECOMPRESSOR FOR VIDEO FOR WINDOWS (**)
---------------------------------------------------------------

INSTALLATION:

- Requires Windows 3.1 and Video for Windows

- NOTE ----> You must restart Windows after installation. This bug will
             fixed in a later release.

- To install the Ultimotion CODEC:
o From Windows MAIN group, click "control panel"
  o click "drivers" icon
  o select "ADD"
  o select "unlisted"
o select "OK". It will go to A: and look for oemsetup.inf, which will
have info it needs to install ultimo.drv in \WINDOWS\SYSTEM and
make Video for Windows aware of it.

- Restart Windows

CAPABILITIES:

- Plays any valid Ultimotion movie, although performance may suffer on
640x480 or high frame rate movies.

- Supports 8, 16, or 24 bit color (because of a limitation in Video for
Windows 1.0, 24 bit color is dithered down to get 16 bit color).

- Scaling supports 2x selection on media player "configuration" menu and
  stretching.

- Supports AVIF_HURRYUP flag, which does decompression without
blitting in cases where we are behind on video.

- Requires a 66MHz 486 to play 320x240 movies at 15 frames per second on
256 color display adapters. Higher color systems are slower.

KNOWN PROBLEMS/LIMITATIONS:

The following problems existed at the time this driver was released for
Beta testing. Ongoing fixes to the Beta will be provided via the BBS
locations below. If you wish to provide feedback, send it to internet ID
ultimotion@vnet.ibm.com by July 1, 1994.

Check the following BBS locations for updated drivers:
PRODIGY - From the OS/2 Club Download Library, select IBM Device Driver
COMPUSERVE - Look in OS2SUPPORT, Library 17, IBM Files

- On VFW 1.1 release, this driver fails on the second video which is
  played, cause currently unknown.

- Some Ultimotion movies don't have any extra sound blocks at
the start. These movies will give poor sound performance (underrun
"gaps") under Windows because of the smaller sound buffers used for
data streaming under Windows. You will need to bring up the AVI file
utility under OS/2 Multimedia VIDEO IN, and use it to apply an audio
"skew" of at least 3 blocks. The leading audio blocks will "prime
the pump" and clean up the audio.

- The AVI MCI component of Video for Windows may fail to open some
of the older Ultimotion files. This is due to an incorrect biSize
field in the bitmap info header in the "strf" RIFF chunck in the header
of the movie. The ones which do not play have a length of 40 instead
of 44. This can be corrected with a hex file editor such as NU.EXE
  (Norton Utilities).

- Some of the videos, when played from slow single spin CDs, show a
black frame when they first appear. This is a peformance artifact,
Single step past this frame and click play button. Video may be
jerky, but it will play. Works fine if you copy it to a hard drive.
