1) PREFACE
==========

This file may be incomplete. For further questions how to customize
kwm in the low level (only interesting for the kwinconfig
developers....)  please have a look into the generated kwmrc and the
source code.

For all programmers: check out kwm.h in libkdecore for lots of
informations about how to use kwm for your purposes. For modules the
class KWMModuleApplication from libkdeui is also a good example on how
to write modules.


2) FAQ
======

FAQ 1: Why should I use kwm? I spent several days in learning how to
     configure 10 different windowmangers. And now where I have a 678
     lines long resourcefile doing exactly what I want, you are comming
     along and want to take my windowmanager away!

Answer: You _should_ not, it is only a _free_ offer. But IMHO your
    are making a mistake if not ;-)

    Some arguments:
   
    - shameless integration into KDE
    - 2nd generation windowmanager. That means it uses a modern GUI
      toolkit for its widgets (buttons, menus, listboxes, etc) instead
      of blowing up the code with a proprietary unconvienient plain Xlib
      implementation.
    - modern and pretty look and _feel_ with unique window titles and icons 
      which do not need to be defined in cryptic resource files.
    - can be configured during runtime without the need to restart it
    - complete keyboard control 
    - excellent focus handling even if you work on different virtual
      desktops (no longer desktopswitching-and-losing-focus like it is
      standard with other windowmangers)
    - includes session management and a really working session management
      proxy for older applications. This proxy is able to restore your
      applications exactly, that means with the correct window properties
      (maximized, sticky, iconified, etc.) on the correct virtual desktop.
    - modern module concept that uses X wherever it is possible. Also
      kwm modules are very independent: They can be started before or
      after kwm. Kwm can even be restarted while the modules are still
      running and will reconnect them automatically.
    - offers some extensions to X in kwm.h: Now applications can even maximize
      theirselfs (or sticky, or decorate/undecorate or whatever) and define 
      miniicons. This works also for mapped (visible) windows!


FAQ 2: Why can't I define new shortcuts for launching applications or
    do whatever? This is very important for me! 

Answer: Because this is not the task of the windowmanger. Use KGlobalShortcut
    for this purpose.


FAQ 3: Why does kwm look so much like Windows 95?

Answer: Ooops, does it? Let me see.... (Matthias trying to find somebody
    who has Windows 95 because he does not have any windows on all his
    computers... Damn... nobody has windows here. Well let's grab an old
    Linux distribution and install fvwm95-2.....) No, I cannot verify
    that at all. kwm looks much prettier and offers more core 
    windowmangement functionality :-)


FAQ 4: Is it possible to add the KDE extensions to other windowmanagers?

Answer: Yes it is. You simple have to go through kwm.h/kwm.C from
    libkdecore and extend your favorite windowmanager to response correct
    to these requests. BTW it is also possible to implement an object 
    request broker in x86 assembler. It's just a question of the 
    investment/result ratio.
   


3) SHORTCUTS
============

    Alt-Esc / Control-Esc :  "Current Session"-manager with logout-button
    Alt-Tab / Alt-Shift-Tab : Traverse the windows of the current desktop
    Ctrl-Tab / Ctrl-Shift-Tab : Traverse the virtual desktops
                                (can be switched of in kwmrc)

    Alt-F2 : Execute command
    Alt-F3 : window operation popup
    Alt-F4 : Close window

    Ctrl-F[1..8] : switch to virtual desktop

    Ctrl-Alt-Esc: Destroy window mode (cursor becomes a pirate)
   

4) MOUSE CONTROL
================

     click onto the border or the titlebar:
            left mouse button: activate and raise the window
            middle mouse button: activate and lower the window
            right mouse button: show windows operation menu if the
                 window is active, otherwise activate it without raising.

     doubleclick on title toggles maximize

     drag of the titlebar: move window (left mouse raises, middle mouse
            keeps the stacking position)

     drag of corners or edges: resize the window (left mouse raises, middle 
            mouse keeps the stacking position)

     the entire window:
            Alt-(left mouse button): move
            Alt-(middle mouse button): raise
            Alt-(right mouse button): resize

     titlebar buttons (configurable):
            Menu: window operations
            Sticky: toggle sticky
            Iconify: iconfiy
            Maximize: 
                  Left mouse button: maximize
                  Middle mouse button: maximize vertically
                  Right mouse button: maximize horizontally
              MaximizeOnlyVertically-option will switch the meaning
              of the left and the middle mouse button.
            Close: close (applications may ask if they have something to save)

  The kwm sources include a subfolder "images", which contains
  an example for the the shape extensions.


6) COMMAND LINE OPTIONS
=======================
   
 -version     (shows the version number including the patchlevel)

 -nosession   (disables the restoration of the previous session.)



7) COMMANDS
===========

You can send commands to kwm with either 

    KWM::sendKWMCommand(QString) (in KDE applications)

or

    kwmcom <command>   (from the command line)


This is especially of interest for kglobalshortcut developers.
At present kwm understands the following commands:

refreshScreen, darkenScreen, logout, commandLine, taskManager,
configure, winMove, winMaximize, winResize, winRestore, winIconify,
winClose, winSticky, winOperations, desktop1, desktop2, desktop3,
desktop4, desktop5, desktop6, desktop7, desktop8, desktop+1,
desktop+2, desktop-1, desktop-2, desktop%2

The semantics of these commands should be obvious. Please note that
the win* commands refer to the current (= active) window.  "desktop%2"
toggles between an odd desktop and the next higher even number. That
means between 1 and 2 or between 3 and 4.  This is useful to emulate
"Up" and "Down" in a virtual n*2 matrix, which is used by the kde pager.
"desktop+2" means "Right" then, "desktop-2" means "Left", respectively.

There is also an option

     TitlebarDoubleClickCommand=<wincom>

where <wincom> can be winMaximize, winShade, winMove, winResize,
winRestore, winIconify, winClose, winSticky or winOperations.

Default is winMaximize, but winShade (a la OpenStep) may also be
useful.
		
8) SOUND EVENTS
===============

kwm raises a couple of sound events, which can be used in a system
sound module. 

At present the following sound events are implemented:
